Lets Give This a Whirl!

Hello Blogosphere!!

My name is Melody and I’m going to be the mastermind behind this shindig! Me and my Husband, Robert, are in the process of purchasing our first home and remodeling it (bit by cheapo bit) to get it to where we are wanting(although, I’m sure if my fickle taste continues as it has the last 23 years of my existence, it will never truly be where I want it :-) ).

A little background on us and then I’ll get to our house…

Rob and I met my Freshman year at college through a mutual friend. We casually hung out for about a year, hung out a few times my first summer of college, and that was about it. Slowly but surely, we started hanging out more and more and eventually worked its way into a dating capacity. He moved into my apartment a couple of months later, and we moved to Evansville in December of 2008. We got engaged in August of 2009, and we were married October 2nd of 2010. Rob works at a local car dealership fixing and painting wrecked cars and making them look new again, while I work at the local ABC affiliate in the commercial traffic department(yes, you read that right…I’m the sorry soul who has to watch EVERY commercial that goes out over the air for our station…exciting(*sarcasm*)). Rob loves to fish and work on his mustang, where as I love photography, and DIY. We both have pretty wicked senses of humor, and are rarely EVER serious about anything. We’re the people you see at the grocery store making stupid faces at each other and talking like idiot in the ice cream aisle…. :-)

Enough about us…lets talk about this little house we bought!

After shelling out nearly $700 a month in rent on our 1bed/1bath apartment for the last two years, I was fed up with never having any money left for anything(you know, things like FOOD). We decided to try to scrape some money together and fairly quickly(thanks to my awesome husband!) came up with enough for a 3.5% down payment for a FHA Loan. After looking at somewhere around 20 houses with our AMAZING Realtor, we found our house! When we first went and looked at it, we called it the Hansel and Gretel house. The previous (and ONLY!) owner had been a single elderly lady, who had obviously not looked at any kind of decor magazine for the last 40+ years. From wonderful furniture and decor(I’m talking rooster paintings made out of beans!), to the beautiful dark wood-paneled kitchen with butter yellow dishwasher and stove(Yikes!), the house was definitely in need of some modern updating. But the house was solid! She had taken immaculate care of everything. The furnace, A/C, Water Heater, and Sump Pump were all new within the last 3 years. The fridge looked to be only a year or two old. The seller was going to be putting a new roof on the house and garage, and the price was WELL within what we were comfortable paying. So we put in an offer. And then argued with the stubborn ass seller for a week! And Finally after he tried to counter with an as-is clause and we rejected and we were walking away.  So that night, the seller got scared and signed back our offer. So here we are.

The house is wonderful. It was built in 1946, and is a 2bed/1bath in 760 sq ft. The house is smaller than our current apartment(860 sq. ft.),  But had a 3/4 basement and a 1 1/2 car garage(hubby is VERY pleased), so storage should not be an issue. There are original hardwoods in all the rooms but the kitchen, with nearly brand new carpet over them. The kitchen is going to need the most work…I’m talking dark composite wood cabinets, brick red laminate countertops, butter yellow ceramic sink(to match the appliances :-/ ), dark wood paneling, faux brick backsplash(on only one side of the kitchen), and teal green indoor/outdoor carpeting…sounds like fun, huh? *slams head against wall*

We have a lot of plans for this house, and have a lot dreams already invested in it… Inspection is tomorrow afternoon, so hopefully I’ll be able to update a little more after that goes down tomorrow. *fingers crossed*
